Rhiannon’s song, as heard at the Wingspan opera house.
The new NPC
Nobody ever bothered to give her a name. The other children called her Dull.
She was small enough to need her toes to see into a water barrel when a merchant lord found her in the alleys of Gelspar. He asked if she was hungry. In the Droops, kindness from a stranger is how you end up with a knife in your gut, so she checked his hands for a weapon first.
August Montgomery bought her from the orphanage for a loaf of milk bread from the Red Market. The matron did not haggle. The House of Courtesans took what was left of the girl and returned a woman fit to charm a king — history, arithmetic, literature, art, and a voice they likened to an angel's.
Then he was outbid. Sixteen years of silk later, Rhiannon sings only what she is given, in venues chosen to send messages she is not permitted to read — and she still wakes with her fingers at her wrists, checking for strings.
From the nightmare “Sing.” A voice commanded. “Sing, or you'll find yourself back where you belong.” The miasma crept through the back of the theatre, inching through the audience seating — she caught the glint of a dagger when one of the lights shifted on the stage.
Just what was the price of bread?
Brought Low · music & words, Jolene Khor
Lands aflight, from dawn to twilight,
We watch from solemn ground.
Cracked crowns, banners down,
Our roots unwound, unwound.
Don't know where, don't know when,
It all repeats, again and again.
I dream a dream of windswept fields.
My heart, my heart, it shall not yield.
The mare. The foal. The thunderous hooves.
A stillness, a stillness, it will not move.
What once a true love of mine.
Now and forever, altared divine.
We pledge on soaring sky, heads high.
What's dead shall never die.
As the Azure lifts it veils,
We seek on sanguine skysails,
Ships soar, sparks fly,
And embers dance like fireflies.
Every flower blooms with time.
Towards the crackling stars it climbs.
The ebb, the flow, the beating—ceaseless.
Daggers drawn. Lances thrust. We're the eternal and peaceless.
Our wings brought low.
Our way, fortune shall blow.
What's dead shall never die.
What's dead shall never die.
From the bestiary
“The voice sounded like Sunwing down — refined and dignified.”
In Adriel, a thing is praised by comparing it to the sunwing. Its down is the softest currency in the upper districts — traded by the pinch, sewn into collars, and used to describe a voice that arrives before its owner does.
Down here in the skiffs, nobody has ever touched any. They only know the phrase — and that when someone speaks to you like that, they are usually about to change your life without asking.
